New Hotness Roundup

I have a Smart Playlist whose parameters are albums released in 2005 and added to my library within the past two weeks. I stole its sobriquet from Aden’s name for the same thing: New Hotness. Here’s what’s on it right now:

Ryan Adams: Jacksonville City Nights I have to admit I haven’t listened to this enough yet. Maybe I need to get over to Surdyk’s and buy some cheap whiskey, then hole up in my room and listen to it until I want to burn down my house.

Fiona Apple: Extraordinary Machine [Versions 1 & 2] I spent the summer falling in love with the leaked, Jon Brion-produced version of this album, only to have her pull a switcheroo on us at the last minute. I suppose I’m willing to give it a chance, but if Matt Chamberlain isn’t on drums, I don’t know …

David Banner: Certified Good lord, he has a dirty mouth. This is another one I haven’t listened to much because the context hasn’t been ideal. Not sure what that context would be.

Boards Of Canada: The Campfire Headphase Just plain gorgeous, start to finish.

Broken Social Scene: Broken Social Scene After growing so well acquainted with You Forgot It In People that it’s like a fifth limb, I’m beginning to date this one casually. But so far, so good. Especially “Shoreline”, “Hotel”, and “Bandwitch”.

Colleen, The Golden Morning Breaks Discreet, organic instrumental music. Also check out their previous, Everyone Alive Wants Answers.

Cut Copy, Bright Like Neon Love Thanks, Joe. Friendly electro-pop is friendly.

Elbow, Leaders Of The Free World As previously blogged about.

Jason Forrest, Shamelessly Exciting Ibid.

Hella, Church Gone Wild/Chirpin’ Hard A few weeks ago during a drunken moment, a colleague of mine showed me a tattoo on his arm of a King Crimson album cover (Discipline). Then I told him about the one I have on my back (Larks’ Tongues In Aspic), and we had the nerdiest music-nerd bonding moment in all of music-nerd history.

Iron & Wine/Calexico, In The Reins EP Seriously recommended for fans of either band.

Minotaur Shock, Maritime Apparently there is such a thing as sugary, guilty-pleasure electronica.

Mouse On Mars, Live04 Hells yes.

Shearwater, Thieves EP Another, different colleague of mine (Jesus, I hate the word colleague, but I can’t think of a better one—fellow nerd?) recommended Shearwater to me recently. He apparently knows me better than I thought.

Isn’t Jacksonville City Nights a revisiting of Whiskeytown? That is the word on the street.

And yes, Hotel and Bandwitch are lovely. Thanks again.

Jacksonville City Nights has an old Whiskeytown song on it actually. The song “The End,” is my favorite so far—to me it seems close to impossible, but somehow Ryan Adams’ vocals have never sounded better.

I swear Fall/Winter is like toxic to the wallet…my brain went into like “gimme gimme” overload on Tuesday. BSS is not as endearing as You Forgot It, but it’s still pretty solid, going to see them the end of this month so still sorta excited for them and all

Some of those albums are great, particularly the Cut Copy and the BoC album. You should also really check out the new My Morning Jacket, which is growing on me with every listen.
